A few days ago I was pleasantly surprised when someone tweeted to tell me how much they liked my “Past Their Best” series of food photographs and then I remembered that I hadn’t even posted the sourdough loaf that triggered the idea for the project!
I’d needed some bread for some photographs so popped around to the supermarket. I decided on a sourdough loaf and I have to admit I choose it purely for its looks, it was that perfect crusty ridge, I just couldn’t resist.
But when I got home I realised that despite its good looks it was actually a day out of date! Not that it mattered to me, I only wanted to photograph it and I’m sure if it hadn’t got covered in fluff and bits from my hessian background it also would have made delicious toast.
Then I got to thinking about how much fresh produce we see for sale at marked down prices when in reality it still has plenty time left to be eaten.
And so the idea for “Past Their Best” was formed, an ongoing project to celebrate the sad and sorry looking produce consigned to a supermarket corner because it’s sell by date has arrived. But still rather beautiful and generally edible for a few more days.
